The MIRC was commissioned in 2024 and allows us to produce radioactive tracers which previously had to be sourced from outside the region.
The centre has an extensive radiopharmaceutical pipeline designed to bring the latest cutting-edge diagnostic tests to patients. First, we are bringing fluorine-18 and gallium-68 tracers to the clinic, to validate our facility and deliver for patients in need of these scans, either as part of their NHS care or in clinical trials. We are also bringing carbon-11 radiotracers online this year, which have great potential for neurological and cardiological use, and will open the door to other opportunities including collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry, to help in their drug development programmes. We are collaborating with academic centres in the UK to bring long-lived radioisotopes into use at the MIRC, which have enormous potential for cancer imaging and national distribution. Our radiopharmaceutical production laboratories are adjacent to the Jack Brignall PET-CT Scanning Centre, so no time is wasted in getting these diagnostic agents from our facility and to patients waiting for their scans.
The Jack Brignall Centre put us in the top division of PET-CT providers in the UK. With the new MIRC we are not only at the top in terms of the service side but also with regard to research and development, which is just as important because it will attract the best research-based scientists in the field to come from other institutions to work at a centre which is now established and recognised internationally.Prof. Nick Stafford, Chair of the Daisy Appeal
The combination of a fixed site PET-CT service coupled to an on-site cyclotron is a proven and successful combination. It is anticipated that the predicted rate of growth of oncology PET-CT will further increase due to the centre's ability to participate in clinical trials work. This facility in Hull will allow close collaboration between clinical and basic science colleagues to develop and pursue a truly translational research programme.
100% of the donations received go to fund vital lifesaving research and provision of medical scanning facilities.
Please note all funds are used in full by the charity to further its objectives.
