Mischief in Pocklington: Local housebuilder launches competition to celebrate ‘Mischief of Rats’ trail

June 2025: Local housebuilder, Barratt & David Wilson Homes Yorkshire East, has launched a unique competition with local schools near to its Stewarts Reach and Wolds View developments in Pocklington - inspired by East Yorkshire’s exciting new public art initiative, ‘A Mischief of Rats’.

The sculpture trail, featuring 45 giant, artist-decorated rat figures, has transformed Hull and the wider East Yorkshire area into an open-air gallery. The sculpture proudly on display in the Pocklington area is just a short walk from Barratt Homes’ Stewarts Reach and David Wilson Homes’ Wolds View developments and sponsored by the housebuilder. Decorated by artist Löis Cordelia and themed ‘Healthcare in the Community’, the design reflects the housebuilder’s ongoing commitment to supporting the well-being of the communities in which they build.

To celebrate the trail with the local area, the housebuilder has launched an exciting opportunity for local school pupils to design their very own rat installation, in partnership with St Mary & St Joseph VC Academy, and Pocklington Junior School. Pupils have been invited to get creative and colour in their own rat design, with all entries being judged by the team at Barratt and David Wilson Homes. A winner from each year group will then be selected and transformed into an outdoor 4-foot sculpture, which will be put on display for all to see.

In line with the trail’s charitable focus, every competition entry will generate a donation to The Daisy Appeal, an organisation that funds medical research and diagnostics for serious illnesses and the charity at the heart of the event.

Daniel Smith, Managing Director of Barratt and David Wilson Homes Yorkshire East, commented:

We’re incredibly proud to support ‘A Mischief of Rats’ and to bring the spirit of this fantastic trail to life at our Stewarts Reach and Wolds View developments in Pocklington. This initiative is a brilliant celebration of East Yorkshire’s cultural heritage and artistic talent, and we’re delighted to be playing a role in extending its reach into the heart of our communities through our very own competition. We look forward to seeing the ideas and imagination that the pupils bring to the project - and we can't wait to see some of their designs transformed into a giant sculpture displayed within our developments, where residents and visitors alike can enjoy it for years to come.
