Dr Saleem Azeem is a Clinical oncologist with clinical and research expertise in translational molecular imaging. He researched on the role of positron emission tomography (PET) in anti-cancer drug development at the Imperial College London MRC Cyclotron Unit in Hammersmith Hospital obtaining a PhD and trained as a clinical oncologist in Merseyside obtaining specialist registration in 2004. Since then, he has worked for the NHS, Academia and Industry. He helped setup the University of Manchester Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre at the Christie Hospital, Manchester following which he joined GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in 2009, where he led and established the oncology imaging programme at the GSK Imaging Centre at the Hammersmith Hospital, London. He subsequently worked for Imanova, a joint venture of Medical Research Council (MRC) UK, Imperial College London, University College London and Kings College London and then for Invicro, a Konica Minolta company leading the translational PET imaging programme in oncology and respiratory medicine. He joined the Hull York Medical School as a Reader and an Honorary Consultant in Oncology at the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in December 2019, attracted by the unique collaboration in the setup of the Hull Molecular Imaging Centres, of which he was the Clinical Director until December 2019. He was instrumental in establishing and expanding molecular imaging research ay Hull.
Saleem is the Clinical and External Engagement Director of the Molecular Imaging Centre (MIRC), Hull and will lead in the initiation and expansion of the Clinical and Research Imaging Programme in consultation with the MIRC Scientific Advisory Board, Daisy Charity Board, MIRC staff, clinicians, academics and industry. Saleem is enthusiastic in his new role at the MIRC and is optimistic in the fulfilment of Daisy Charity’s vision to make MIRC a premier centre for cutting-edge PET research and its clinical integration for the benefit of patients in the region and nationwide. He is particularly enthused by the exceptional facilities at MIRC that house the cyclotron and radio-pharmacy facilities capable of producing radiotracers for clinical use and the exceptional staff support.
